Research group at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces

The group at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces is constituted by three group members: Dr. Savateev (main PI), Dr. Giusto (co-PI), and Dr. Sonia Żółtowska (postdoc). Here the synergies between the focus of two group leaders enables to leverage their deep understanding in carbon nitride-based materials and preparation thereof, including metal poly(heptazine imides) and thin films by chemical vapor deposition. The purpose of the MPIKG group is to prepare carbon nitrides with metal nanoparticles via different methods and perform preliminary tests.

Here, the design of the materials and the structure of the membrane is a crucial point for obtaining microrobots that can efficiently convert inputs in outputs with high added value. By means of chemical vapor deposition we aim to deposit carbon nitride and/or poly (heptazine imides) nanomaterials within a porous inorganic frame. The as-deposited materials are then eventually surface coated with noble metal nanoparticles to enhance the photoactivity and reaction selectivity.

PI Dr. Oleksandr Savateev

Oleksandr Savateev received his PhD degree in organic chemistry from the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine in 2016. Shortly after defense of his thesis, he joined Colloid Chemistry department of the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interface. Currently he is an internationally recognized researcher, whose expertise is materials science, organic chemistry, photochemistry and physical chemistry. He is a founder of Innovative Heterogeneous Photocatalysis – the research group, which is the leader in Europe in carbon nitride photocatalysis, a creator of the Database of Photocharged Materials (pcmat.mpikg.mpg.de). He is an editor and author of several books – “Carbon nitrides. Structure, properties and applications in science and technology”, “UV-Visible Photocatalysis for Clean Energy Production and Pollution Remediation. Materials, Reaction Mechanisms, and Applications” and author of more than 70 research articles and 3 patents. He is a recipient of several national German and European grants and a member of consortia of researchers that targeting acute energy problems by means of solar light and photocatalysis.

co-PI Dr. Paolo Giusto

Paolo Giusto did his Ph.D. at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Markus Antonietti. During his Ph.D. he developed carbon nitride and boron carbon nitride materials by chemical vapor deposition as high refractive index materials for optical applications. Shortly after his Ph.D. he was promoted as group leader for the development of disruptive materials and methods in sodium-ion batteries, within the framework of the ERC Synergy project MoMa-STOR (ID: 951513). He co-leads also a DFG-SPP 2370 project on “Nitroconversion” with Dr. Barham (Universitaet Regensburg) and Dr. Savatieiev, to photoelectrochemically convert atmospheric nitrogen in high value organic molecules.

CATART Resarcher Dr. Sonia Żółtowska

Sonia Żółtowska did her PhD at Poznan University of Technology. Her research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of bio-based composites and oxides systems for catalytic purposes. She is a co-author of more than 25 papers. She obtained research grants funded by the German Academic Exchange Service and the National Science Center of Poland.
